"we ARE ALL LOOKING FOR LOVE" WINDOW INSTALLATION

The classic opera Turandot was performed at the Finnish National Opera in early 2023. In today's world, the piece is controversial due to its exoticism and orientalism.

The work had been visually revamped, and thus there was a desire to convey the message of the opera to the public walking amidst the sleet: “It doesn't matter who you are or where you come from – we all seek love.

The opera wanted to bring people to the forefront, beyond the stereotypes of decades past, with the central themes being the psychology of the characters and a modern story about society.

We were shown the set designs for the piece, and I read the old libretto, which was depressing. I decided to focus on that central message and a few elements in the sets, such as the starry sky and cherry blossoms.

The starry sky was built on the backdrop using programmable LED lights, twinkling in the dark January. The music of the piece accompanied in the background, and the central message of love was displayed in three languages.

The installation was created in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, Sivulliset collective and Goljat.
